The Dutch Photography Museum (Het Nederlands Fotomuseum) made a surprising discovery in their vast archives: portraits of Ed van der Elsken’s family during his childhood, taken by Hans Spies.
A touching look into the intimacy of the famed photographer and filmmaker, the pictures were found after Van der Elsken’s brother, Bert, mentioned that Spies had photographed their family back in the 1930’s. The families probably knew each other as Spies was a renown interior photographer, and Van der Elsken’s father owned a furniture shop. The Museum, which holds Spies’ archives as well as Van der Elsken’s, navigated through dozens of thousands of photos before finding the portraits right in time to publish them in their PhotoQ 2011-2012 Yearbook.
