w.p. hubert van blijenburgh:
kamergymnastiek voor iedereen
w.l. & j. brusse n.v., rotterdam, around 1930
size: 25 x 17 cm
designer: piet zwart (cover)
another dutch book i include because of its great cover design by one of the modernist pioneers, piet zwart (1885-1977).
zwart visualised the subject of indoor gymnatics for everybody with a photograph in blue overprinted with diagrams in red, and slanted sans-serif text lines running parallel to the forearm of the exercising man.
the author hubert van blijenburgh was a prompoter of gymnastics who published several books on this subject with the brusse company.
the typography of the inner pages is more traditional, ...
... but i quite like the red silhouettes of an exercising man ...
... which are from the ten foldout plates at the back describing the exercises.
See for more book (design) stories from new typography to swiss style ...
