Photobook 'M'n vader/My Father-Deddi'
The photobook 'M'n vader/My Father-Deddi' is about the course of the disease of Chantal's father as well as the father-daughter relationship. In October 2001 the book was published in cooperation with Foundation/Publishing AgencyDuo/Duo (Aad Speksnijder) in Rotterdam.

Deddi shows a body that is slowly taken over by illness. It is the body of the photographer’s father. As a viewer, you almost have the feeling that you are out of place as a party in this story, in which a, generally abstract, illness takes on a personal face.


Chantal Spieard, currently living in Amsterdam, was born in 1974. After graduating in 2000 from the Utrecht University of Arts where she studied Photography, she nowadays works as a freelance photographer represented by the agency Foto Formation in Amsterdam.


This guide focuses on the meaning and significance of photobooks concerning health care environments. Heart-rending, intimate stories on matters of life, sickness, death and personal loss, are observed and experienced by consecutive generations of photographers working in the documentary tradition.

La vente de livres de photographie organisée par Pierre Bergé & Associés le 3 mai dernier à Drouot marque peut-être un tournant du marché. En effet, sur les 302 lots proposés seuls 191 ont trouvé preneurs. En outre, nombre d’estimations, extrêmement prudentes, n’ont pas été atteintes. L’expert de la vente, Dirk Bakker, que nous avons rencontré avant les enchères, nous a expliqué ses estimations par l’état médiocre de nombre des ouvrages proposés. Afin de hausser la valeur moyenne de chaque lot, la plupart comprenaient plusieurs livres [voir notre article annonçant la vente]. Parmi les lots que nous avions remarqué, le Ralph Gibson incluant la trilogie Days at Sea et 4 volumes supplémentaire estimé 350 / 450 € est parti pour 250 €. Les lots Esko Männikkö, Larry Sultan ou Frank Breuer + Paul Shambroon ont été ravalés. Le lot Don McCullin estimé 300 / 400 € est parti à 150 €. Les classiques plongent également. Les Américains de Frank (Delpire 58) sont partis à 500 € ! L’estimation était de 800 / 1200 €, ce qui, encore une fois, n’était pas très cher. Paris de Nuit de Brassaï atteint son estimation basse, 1200 €. The English at home de Brandt, estimé 650 / 750 € est parti pour 100€… De tels résultats doivent inciter les amateurs à la prudence lors de leurs achats chez les libraires d’ancien ou sur Abebooks.

Christopher Williams

Born in 1956, Christopher Williams lives and works in Los Angeles. He studied in the 1970s at the California Institute of Arts under the first generation of West coast conceptual artists. In contrast to the first generation of conceptual photographers, however, Williams mobilizes perfection and aesthetics to enhance the impact of his works. Williams’ photographs, videos, installations, sculptures and performances study the conditions of presentation and representation and call into question spoon-fed perception and true-to-reality reproductions connected to the question of how our communication mechanisms and aesthetic conventions influence our perception and understanding of reality.

Ringier is a multinational integrated media company. Founded in 1833, Ringier is carrying print, broadcast, radio, online and mobile media brands, and is a successful player in the printing, entertainment and internet business. Ringier is a Swiss family-company with headquarters in Zurich.

The Ringier Annual Reports, designed by well-known artists since 1997, is one of the most interesting, generous, dubious and aloof publication series of the decade. Every Annual Report from this multinational media enterprise is an artist’s book and advertising brochure as well as a meeting place (or dance floor) for contradictions. The artist’s book as a site for self-empowerment and self-determination here becomes a communication platform for a family business that is not unfamiliar with the dream of selfdetermination. As a result, the free artist meets the free entrepreneur; both are reflected in their wish for independence, while the entrepreneur pays for the other’s freedom and in return gets art, discussion and attention. Clegg & Guttmann made a start in 1997 and were followed by Sylvie Fleury, Christian Philipp Müller, Harald F. Müller, Liam Gillick, Aleksandra Mir, Christopher Williams, Matt Mullican, Richard Prince, Richard Phillips, Peter Fischli/David Weiss and now Josh Smith.

Utrecht Goitre Paul Kooiker Mirelle Thijsen's Choice of Photobooks on Care environments and Matters of Life and Death Photography

Utrechtse Krop (Utrecht Goitre) shows unique medical historical photographs alongside work by Dutch photographer and artist Paul Kooiker (winner of the 1996 Prix de Rome for photography).

`Utrechtse Krop` (Utrecht goitre) was the name given to a thyroid condition once common in the Dutch town of Utrecht, due to a deficiency of iodine in drinking water. The exhibition Utrechtse Krop in De Kabinetten van De Vleeshal centred around the appeal of illness and the fragility of our physical being. The photographs on display came from the archives of Utrecht`s university hospital – records of medical disorders, photographed since circa 1890.

In the early days of medical photography clinical standards had yet to be formulated for photographic images. Consequently, many photographs are more poignant and beautiful than they are scientific. Light, space and patients` complete submission to doctors and photographers evoke feelings of compassion, surprise, embarrassment and amusement rather than disgust or scientific curiosity.

This guide focuses on the meaning and significance of photobooks concerning health care environments.
