The work of 100 photographers will go on display today for the largest display of contemporary portrait photography ever held.
The Portrait of Britain exhibition, which opens on September 1, has been coordinated by the British Journal of Photography and aims to celebrate diversity in the UK,
The images will be show on JCDecaux public digital screens across the country.
Whittled down from 13,000 open submission entries to a list of 100, the photographs have been chosen by a judging panel including the BJP’s editorial director Simon Bainbridge, Magnum photographer Olivia Arthur, The Guardian Weekend picture editor Caroline Hunter and photographer and writer Martin Usborne.
In the third year of the exhibition, London photographers include Andrea Zvadova, who presents a work from her series about albinism, Christian Sinibadi, whose portrait depicts an east London rabbi, Curtis Gibson, who photographed fashion designer Zandra Rhodes and Samuel McElwee, whose image shows a young woman’s delighted expression when she opens her eyes and sees a pug puppy.
200 photographs shortlisted for the exhibition will also go to print in a Portrait of Britain book for the first time, which will be released on September 6.
