The Nationaal Archief in The Hague preserves almost one thousand years of history, in the form of over 110 kilometres of archives, almost 300,000 maps and drawings and more than 2 million photos. The archives were created by the national government, but archives from private institutions and individuals are also preserved at the Nationaal Archief as interesting supplements to the government archives.
Bij het Nationaal Archief in Den Haag ligt bijna duizend jaar geschiedenis opgeslagen in 110 kilometer archieven, bijna 300.000 kaarten en tekeningen en ruim 2 miljoen foto’s. De archieven zijn afkomstig van de rijksoverheid. Daarnaast vormen archieven van particuliere instellingen en personen een interessante aanvulling op de overheidsarchieven.

The Nationaal Archief photo collection consists of more than 2 million photos that cover a period of more than a hundred years of national and international history. More than 500,000 digitalised photographs can already be viewed in low resolution on our at online image bank . Over the course of the next few years, the majority of the Nationaal Archief’s photo collection will be digitalised in high resolution as part of the Images for the Future project. The Nationaal Archief manages important documentary photograph collections. These collections contain genres and subjects such as press photography, social and historic documentary photography, reports on the former Dutch colonies, football and the Royal Family.
De fotocollectie van het Nationaal Archief bestaat uit meer dan 2 miljoen foto’s die een periode van honderd jaar nationale en internationale geschiedenis bestrijken. Meer dan 500.000 gedigitaliseerde foto’s zijn al in lage resolutie te bekijken op de online beeldbank. Binnen het digitaliseringsproject Beelden voor de Toekomst zal het belangrijkste deel van de fotocollectie van het Nationaal Archief in de komende jaren beschreven en in hoge resolutie gedigitaliseerd worden. Het Nationaal Archief beheert belangrijke documentaire fotocollecties. Deze collecties bevatten genres en onderwerpen als persfotografie, sociale en historische documentaire fotografie, reportages over de voormalige Nederlandse koloniën, voetbal en de Koninklijke familie.
About the historical photo collections of Spaarnestad Photo
The Nationaal Archief recently began a close co-operation with Spaarnestad Photo that will eventually lead to the Nationaal Archief managing the collections of both institutions. Spaarnestad Photo manages a unique and rich archive containing more than 12 million press and documentary photographs taken during the 19th and 20th centuries from around the world. The core of the collection is the photograph archive of De Spaarnestad, a magazine publisher founded in Haarlem in 1906, which later became VNU.
Sinds kort werkt het Nationaal Archief nauw samen met Spaarnestad Photo, wat ertoe zal leiden dat het Nationaal Archief in de toekomst de collecties van beide instellingen gaat beheren. Spaarnestad Photo beheert een uniek en rijk archief met 12 miljoen pers- en documentaire foto’s uit de 19e en 20ste eeuw van over de hele wereld. De kern van de collectie is het fotoarchief van de Haarlemse tijdschriftenuitgeverij De Spaarnestad (het latere VNU).
Co-operation Nationaal Archief and Spaarnestad Photo

There is a great deal of common ground between the photograph collections of the Nationaal Archief and Spaarnestad Photo. The two parties’ decision to begin co-operating creates a high-quality selection of Dutch documentary and press photography with more than 14 million images. The collection will allow students, publishers, journalists, scientists and other interesting parties to form their own vision of the history of the 20th century.
Er zijn veel raakvlakken tussen de fotocollecties van het Nationaal Archief en Spaarnestad Photo. Door het besluit van het Nationaal Archief en Spaarnestad Photo om een samenwerking aan te gaan, ontstaat een topselectie van Nederlandse documentaire/persfotografie met ruim 14 miljoen beelden. Een collectie waaruit scholieren, studenten, uitgevers, journalisten, wetenschappers en andere belangstellenden hun eigen beeld van de geschiedenis van de 20ste eeuw kunnen vormen.

You can help us enrich our knowledge of the photo collections by adding tags and comments. At the moment, 200 photographs from the Nationaal Archief’s collection (most of them from the Labour Inspectorate collection) and 200 from the Spaarnestad Photo collection are available for viewing on Flickr the Commons. We will be adding new material regularly, and hope that you will continue to return to the site to see what’s new.
